Zoo Animals Get Christmas Presents
2008-12-23
Christmas came early in the animal kingdom at Taronga Park zoo in Sydney, Australia on Tuesday.
Some of the zoo's most famous residents awoke to some very merry treats.
The excitement was clearly too much for some, although zoo workers insist the lioness with her head in a paper bag was hungry or curious but not camera-shy.
For the meerkats it was a big event... Even when one managed to get into a package but not out of it, until zoo staff went to help.
Mary the Gibbon, at 50 years old, had seen it all before and could barely be coaxed to ground-level for her Christmas goodies.
But she finally accepted her gifts and went back to the peace and quiet of her tree to enjoy the treats.

Icy Multnomah Falls
2008-12-18
Multnomah Falls, in the Columbia River Gorge near Portland, Oregon makes for a stunning site Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile - the roads that lead to the popular hiking area are getting dicey.
Snow, rain, and freezing rain will make roads slick at least through Thursday in northwestern Oregon. The snow is expected to intensify as the weather front moves south.
A winter weather advisory for the north and central Oregon coast has been canceled, as has one for pockets of freezing rain in Portland.
But it remains in effect for the Cascade Range and foothills and the Coast Range, with a cold front producing light, fluffy snow that can reduce visibility.
Up to 30 inches of snow was expected in the Cascades Wednesday night.

Norwegian Hotel Made of Ice
2008-12-17
Norwegian artist Peder Istad is on the verge of finishing his decoration of a second ice hotel in the mountain village of Bjorli, western Norway, to replace one that melted in the Spring. The greatest challenge this year was making the hotel's chapel, with an altar, altarpiece and altar-ring, all made from snow and ice. The hotel opens on Saturday with the possibility of hosting weddings and christenings.
"We work completely differently from all other ice-hotels in the world, there is none that is similar to this project. We direct the expression, it is a bit like making a movie. We set the mood, we set some premises and work from those, and then we get a more united... I think the project becomes more interesting."
Peder Istad has received the job of decorating the second ice hotel at Bjorli for the second year in a row. The first one melted in the spring sun in May. With 42,000 pounds of ice, Istad and his workers are decorating 12 individually styled bedrooms. The greatest challenge this year, however, is making the snow-chapel deep within the hotel.
Last winter, the interest around the first ice hotel exceeded all expectations for the four months it lasted. Over 5,000 people were shown around the hotel and 450 people chose to sleep in the colorfully lit snow.
Peder Istad said "One room last year was very blue, so you felt cold as soon as you stepped into it. Then there were others that were warmer, and they were more popular. But it is...it is drama, we create drama. That's important."
Istad is trying to serve the audience an overall artistic impression. At one side of a room they are working on they are building a bar, at the other an altar, an altarpiece and altar-ring in ice and snow.

Lion Cub Makes Debut
2008-12-17
One lion cub will garner a lot of attention this coming weekend at a local Massachusetts zoo.
The cub was a holiday surprise for zoo employees. Most of them did not know that the lioness was expecting when she gave birth just three weeks ago.
The cuddly new cub's famous father - a white lion named Ramses – had drawn a lot of visitors over the last few months after being featured in "People" magazine back in April.
This weekend however, the unnamed cub will steal that spotlight as visitors gear up to see him make his big debut Saturday.

China Gives Pandas to Taiwan
2008-12-15
Chinese and Taiwanese journalists were invited to have a special look at two pandas that will soon be sent from mainland China to Taiwan, in a highly anticipated exchange signifying warming ties between the long time rivals.
Tuan Tuan, the male, and Yuan Yuan, the female, which were described as a "happy pair" were filmed at the Ya'an Panda Reserve Park in Si Chuan and reported to be safe and well.
Beijing first offered the pandas to Taiwan in 2005 but Taiwan's former leaders resisted the move, saying it was part of Chinese efforts to persuade the island to unify with the mainland.
Taiwan's current President Ma Ying-jeou, however, has tried to nurture closer ties with the mainland and accepted the pandas as a goodwill gesture.
"Tuan Tuan" and "Yuan Yuan," whose names mean unification in Chinese, have passed health checks and will travel to the Taipei Zoo accompanied by a veterinarian and a panda keeper, the Chengdu Daily newspaper reported on Friday.
The handlers will bring along a week's supply of the panda's favorite foods which include bamboo, apples and steamed cornbread to ease the adjustment.
Huang Zhi, one of the keepers of Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan said it was important for him to accompany the endangered animals as he could assess their medical needs in case anything goes wrong.
The departure date for the four-year-old pandas has not yet been announced.
Zhang Long Tan, a reporter from Taiwan told CCTV that the Taiwanese people were eagerly awaiting the arrival of both pandas.
In return for the pandas, China will receive two of Taiwan's unique Formosan serows, which are a goat like mammal.
China and Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949.
Beijing continues to claim the self-governing island as part of its territory, and has been using a blend of threats and diplomacy to try to bring Taiwan back into its fold.
